Why is the lion called the king of beasts?

King of the Beast
Its terrifying roar and kingly appearance have helped earn the lion its nickname “King of Beast.”  Probably this is not because the lion could defeat all other animals in combat, nor because it is the biggest animal.

But throughout history, the lion has been thought of as the symbol of strength because it ranks among the fiercest and strongest of all wild creatures.
Its ferocity and the roar of its voice strikes terror in the hearts of both men and animal alike.  The long mane of the male gives the lion a proud and kingly appearance.  Lions live on the plains of Africa.  Newborn lion cubs are about the size of a large house cat.
When fully grown, the male lion may measure more than 9 feel long from his nose to the tip of his tail.  And weight more than 400 pounds.  One would expect lions to be fearless in hunting, yet they sometimes wait in ambush for prey to come close, the attack with a sudden pounces.
In circuses, these lordly animal attract much attention.  Sometimes a lion trainer will even put his head in a lion’s mouth.–Dick Rogers

  1. THE KING OF THE BEASTS

It is true that a male lion as a majestic look. There is a lot more reasons. The lion was proclaimed the "King of the Beasts" thousands of years ago in the antique Mesopotamia at the down of civilisation. In those times there were great predators living in Mesopotamia like the brown bears (similar to the grizzly), leopards, hyenas, cheetahs and the Caspian tiger (similar to the Siberian). There were large herds of herbivores including buffalos and elephants too. Were goes the large preys, goes the lions too. Large herds need open spaces. Lions are practically attracted to large preys for two reasons. First the heavy males are heavily built in the front of they body, this makes them very strong but relatively slow in their movements. Large preys are also slower so it is more dangerous but more accessible to male lions. I don't say that a male lion can't catch a fast prey occasionally, because they do in regions were they are enough vegetation. The second reason, most lions live in a pride. They are many mouths to feed, so they chose large preys. The antique people from Mesopotamia had a choice of many powerful predators to choose for. In antiquity lions were considered the top land predator and the eagle the top air predator. They found theses two predators the most formidable of all.

Now the Mesopotamian kings needed to show that they were capable of protecting they citizens from their enemies they wanted to be regarded powerful and brave. To convinces the population, they hunted and killed the most powerful beast they found the mighty lion. This way the kings were showing they had control over the nature. Lions were not only the top predators, the male lion was admired as the optimum warrior. Fighting is the male lion's speciality. Kings kept captives animals and organized animal combats. They were well aware of the male lion fighting skills. It is to no surprised that in antiquity god and goddesses of wars had practically all some Lion characteristics. All powerful rulers wanted to by associated with the mighty lion. For a very long time, only kings had the right to hunt lions.

The second important animal was an herbivore he was too regarded as a very powerful animal, the bull. In comparisons antique texts gave little attention to the other predators. Yes they are antique scriptures of tigers, bears and so on hunting, but they are very little images of them. The other great predators did not made the same impression. Like the National Geographic said, they are no animals safe from lions. The combination of the brute power of male lions and the athletics qualities and speed of the lionesses made this duo a formidable combination. Few people know that the lioness is on the list of the fastest land animal on earth, she is the second fastest big cat. The cheetah is first. We shouldn't be surprise to know that lions were once the most spread animal on earth and they killed the largest preys on earth too. So by definition they are the top land predators, the male the top warrior. These are the reasons why the lion was proclaimed the King of the beasts.

  2. They are no invincible predators, but in a fair fight, it is almost overwhelming for a tiger to defeat an healthy born in the wild male lion of equal age and size. All feline have poor stamina. But lions have more stamina and will power than tigers. The lion is a all around more formidable animal. WHAT IS STRONGER THAN A MALE LION, IS ANOTHER MALE LION. Perhaps it is better to compare tigers with the lioness. The male lion is unique, he belongs to a higher league.

6- THE 1933 BIG CAGE FILM THE WHOLE STORY.

First found the whole scene clean images versions. In the Big Cage scenes in few occasions the tiger tried to escaped but the lion ran often him. In nature when a tiger face serious opposition he retreats. The tiger (s) did the same. He knew he could not defeat and sense his life was in danger. A frame by frame examination on versions that have clear images, shows in a few occasions, the tiger retained momentarily the lion on the ground by his mane. Details of this scene was lather explained in the newspapers (The Milwaukee journal July 18, 1962 ). The black mane lion face not one but three tigers in a row. The lion killed so fasts the first and second tigers that they did not have enough footage. A third tiger was send and the male lion still had enough of energy in him. If I remember correctly, the last tiger tried to escape too. At the end the keepers managed to stop the fight when the lion was held down by his mane again. Now all 4 performing male big cats used by Beatty were born in the wild and were in top shape.

    THE TIGER EXPERT KAILASH SANKHALA.

One of the greatest tiger expert was Kailash Sankhala (1925-1994) known as "The Tiger Man of India". The tiger was his favourite animal. From his 1970's book, he had studied tigers for many years and when to the Gir forest too. There are only 10 to 12 regions in the whole India that can suits the lions needs. Once, these few dispersed places were eventually all occupied by lions. To do so lions had to pass through the tiger's moist regions first. Kailash Sankhala wrote that the lions took the territories away from the tigers. Before lions were exterminated by men, tigers totally disappeared from these regions. On page 119 Kailash Sankhala had the honesty to state in a fair fight on a one on one combat a tiger is no match for a lion he added that a tiger will avoid a lion. Sankhala saw lion/tiger combats too and the male lion was victorious.

The title lion "king of the jungle" come from India a tiger land. The Lion "king of the beasts" comes from "Mesopotamia" a tiger land too.

  3. In Nature animals are classified in rank between themselves and between other animal species. The law of nature is the ones who controls the food are the dominators ( If you have 2 dogs or 2 cats in your home, it can be very obvious or subtle but one will dominate the other, it's a nature's law. Even between cows, there will be a rank amount them too). In Africa the rank of land predators is more or less lions, spot hyenas, leopards, cheetahs and jackals. Between herbivores they is a rank too. It is more obvious when the food and water is rare, who's will get the best place or safety reason, the stronger individual or specie will dominate. Some examples, a bison killing an elk. They were wolves around, by killing a weaker herbivore the wolf attention will be on the carcass not on the bison.

Koreans gave enrichment ball toy with a chicken inside to 3 or 4 tigers, probably attracted by the smell, one male lion and two lionesses came in the tiger's side and took the ball from the tigers who immediately had retreated. The lions brought the ball to the lion's side. When it comes for food, tigers knows that the male lion mean business. Another example of lions in control.

  5. TIGER & LION WEIGHT

About their average weight, many decades ago some writers stated that large Siberians and Bengals too were not the norm. But somehow their words were not been heard. The old weight tigers and Lion records had been revised not so long ago. It appears that many were not trustworthy and often exaggerated. Now it looks like there are little differences between a Siberian and a Bengal tiger. The new studies shows another unexpected surprise in average lions are a little heavier but it seems they may be more oversize tigers than they are oversize lions. SO IT IS MORE EXACT TO SAY THAT LIONS AND TIGERS ARE BOTH THE LARGEST CATS. Archaeology also shows that the largess cats ever lived were the lions living and north America and Europe's cave lions. These new facts had been known for a few years now. Little efforts had been done to bring up to date these new data in wild life sites and blogs.

FROM WCS RUSSIA (wildlife conservation society)

    Physical appearance:

Siberian tigers are often considered the largest of the tiger sub-species, although they are in fact about the same size as the Bengal tiger. An adult male usually reaches a body length of 2 meters, with his tail adding another meter. Average weight for males is 160-190 kg (353-419 lbs), while females are smaller, weighing in at 110-130 kg (243-286 lbs). The largest male captured for scientific research under the Siberian Tiger Project weighed in at 206 kg (450 lbs).

  7. The Church hand-picked the lion as a replacement animal when they declared war upon the bear. The bear ( grizzly ) was the original "King of Beasts" in all of Europe. But because of the multitude of bear cults spread throughout Europe, the Church decided to end the bear's reign.
The lion replaced the bear starting in 1000 AD and was finally accepted by all countries in 1200 AD. The bear had held the title for tens of thousands of years previously.

    1. Incorrect the lion was proclaimed "king of the beasts" some 4000 years ago in the antique Mesopotamia the land of the Asiatic lion, Caspian tiger and brown bear. The oldest animal-man statuette ever found was the lion-man. It was found in Europe, in Germany a brown bear land. This shows antique people wanted to be associated with the cave lions and lions were worshiped.
